Jessica & Home Secretary Welcome Minimum Standards for Policing 11 April 2008
Jessica Welcomes New Era of Policing
Jessica Morden, MP for Newport East, welcomed the nationwide launch of the new policing pledge, which sets minimum standards for policing and gives people a greater say and influence over how their streets are policed.
The minimum standard is being applied to the Neighbourhood Police Scheme, which consists of police officers and police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). The scheme, which has been a highly successful initiative across Newport East, is designed to work in tandem with local people to ensure effective and tailored policing for local areas. The minimum standards include:
• Arranging to visit residents at a convenient time;
• Regular reporting on the progress of detecting a crime;
• How a victim of crime is treated and supported; and
• How and when local crime information is provided to the public
Jessica said "The Neighbourhood Policing Scheme has been a great success. Gwent Police have been ahead of the game in implementing neighbourhood policing. We already have teams in every ward working with PCSOs, holding PACT meetings with the community to decide local policing priorities. People can see and are able to contact a dedicated police team for their neighbourhood. These minimum standards will further cement the great job neighbourhood police teams are already doing."
