Simple and Fair Tariffs on Energy Prices
We all know energy prices are going up – and it’s having a devastating effect on household budgets. The cost of a typical dual fuel bill is now £1,345 – a 48% increase since 2007. As winter approaches, we’ll see the dire consequences these rises will have, particularly on pensioners and families, who are already feeling the pinch of higher food and fuel prices.
All of this is made even more infuriating, when energy firms are announcing
higher profits generally, and on each customer. The Coalition government’s
advice is to shop around. In effect, it’s the fault of customers for soaring
energy prices, because they are not shopping around.
It is becoming ever so clearer that we need to urgently reform our energy
market. That is why I support Labour’s call to:
1. An investigation into the mis-selling of energy and compensation for
consumers who have been ripped off
2. Simple and fair tariffs.
3. Transparency on trading data
4. Reform of the energy market to break the dominance of the Big Six.
5. Using energy companies’ soaring profits to help families and businesses
with rising energy bills now
We must do everything we can to protect pensioners and many families from
the financial bite this winter.
